Elephants are among the largest and strongest animals in the world, even though they have a purely vegetarian diet. They like all types of plants, but are particularly fond of acacia leaves.
Acacia are large, fast-growing shrubs that can grow up to 5-20 metres high. Their leaves and fruits are very special treats for elephants. However, the plant doesn't make it so easy for the animals. It has sharp thorns and when nibbled, produces an acid that makes the leaves inedible. It also distributes this acidic smell through the air and thus "warns" other acacia trees. The bull and the cow therefore only eat the shrubs that are not downwind.
